The general impression that the rural Mid-west was quiet, serene, and pure is erroneous. Major industry thrived here - Maytag, John Deere, and other industrial giants located in Iowa. And in Maquoketa, the Clinton Engines Corporation came from nowhere to world supremacy in the manufacture of gasoline-powered small engines and related products with over 18 million sold. Quiet, shucks! There was real thunder from the prairie.
