Susan Lucke was born and raised in Bellevue, Jackson County, Iowa. Her extensive research into a noteworthy if little noted event in Iowa life led her to realize that Iowa did not evolve via a strictly serene pastoral experience but had a real “wild west” experience much like Dodge City, Abilene, Deadwood, and Tombstone, with some aspects that linger with us today. Relive the Bellevue shootout between Sheriff Van Warren and his posse and a gang of counterfeiters, horse thieves, and thugs at Bellevue’s Brown Hotel in 1840. This book is chock full of genealogical as well as historical information. A “must read” for anyone interested in Iowa or Midwest history. This book is also available in most major book stores. Miss Lucke was the inspiration for and the inaugural member of the Society’s Resident Scholar program at the Jackson County Historical Museum.
